Tragedy At The Zoo

I'm sure you are all aware of the tragic events that have happened yesterday. This was one of the toughest days in Chester Zoo’s long history.

The remarkable efforts from the zoo team and the emergency services meant the fire was extinguished as quickly as possible. The dedication shown by the team in the whole incident was exemplary. Leading terrified animals away from a burning building, getting guests away from Monsoon Forest safely and sending updates on the situation to a concerned public... these people are heroes.

Most of the animals (including a troop of critically-endangered Sumatran orang-utans, several silvery gibbons, a troop of Sulawesi macaques and a pair of rhinoceros hornbills) were successfully led to safety; however, they were unable to save some of the insects, frogs, fish and small birds who were located near the area of the fire. For the keepers that worked with them, this must be a devastating loss; it's tragic to lose any animal.

Rebuilding efforts will begin as soon as is possible, new homes have been found within the zoo for all of the animals affected and the animal teams are working around the clock to relocate them as soon as possible.

I'm amazed at the outpouring of public support that has been shown; I thank everyone who sent well-wishes and has donated to the fundraising campaign. If you wish to contribute, please click the link below and donate. The zoo would greatly appreciate it.
